Abstract:

With increasing interest in high Earth orbits, the BRAHE telescope system (Beyond suRveillance for spAce risk of the Korean High Earth orbit region) is being developed as a ground-based optical surveillance capability. The system is approaching installation readiness and is designed to support routine tracking and monitoring of Korean space assets and potentially hazardous resident space objects in high Earth orbit.
BRAHE comprises a 0.8 m-class main telescope providing a wide field of view of 1.1 deg², complemented by a wide-field sub optical unit and four auxiliary fixed-pointing telescopes. These will be integrated within a dedicated dome and enclosure and the system will be operated automatically.
The primary mission of BRAHE is to maintain optical surveillance of the high Earth orbit region relevant to the Korean Peninsula by (1) tracking and characterizing Korean space assets in high Earth orbit, (2) monitoring nearby hazardous objects that may pose risks, and (3) surveying the regional high Earth orbit environment to support space situational awareness activities.
